K18 FutureIQ: Is the New Hair Longevity Serum Worth It? A Stylist’s Honest Take

K18 FUTURE IQ HAIR SERUM STYLIST REVIEW

K18 just released a $120 scalp serum, and our clients have questions. Mostly: "Do I need this?" Sometimes: "Is this why my hair is in the shower drain?"

We've been doing hair for over 30 years, so here's our honest take on FutureIQ: what it is, who it's actually for, and who should save their money.

What FutureIQ actually is

FutureIQ is a scalp serum you apply at night, and it's not a repair product. K18 made its name with a mask that repairs damage inside the hair strand. FutureIQ works on a different problem: the scalp and follicles your hair grows from.

K18 calls this new category "hair longevity." The idea is borrowed from skincare. You don't wait for wrinkles to start using sunscreen, and the brand argues you shouldn't wait for thinning to start caring for your scalp.

It targets three things:

  • Shedding, by helping the root hold on to the hair longer
  • Early graying, by supporting the cells that make hair color
  • Scalp aging, by protecting the scalp from everyday stress like UV, pollution, heat styling, and chemical services

Introduced over the summer of 2026, FutureIQ costs $120 for a 3 oz bottle, which K18 says is about a month's supply. It's fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free.

How it works, without the lab coat

FutureIQ runs on what K18 calls MultiVital technology. In plain terms, it's a mix of peptides and antioxidants designed to do several jobs at once.

  • Peptidesย are short chains of amino acids. K18 uses them in a formula designed to support the proteins involved in anchoring hair at the root.
  • Antioxidants defend against oxidative stress, the daily wear from sun, pollution, and styling that ages your scalp the same way it ages your skin.

You apply it once nightly to a dry or damp scalp, massage it in, and leave it overnight. K18 recommends four measured droppers per application. That's the whole routine.

One honest note: K18 reports encouraging results from a 12-week clinical study, including reduced shedding and fewer visible grays. But the publicly available information doesn't tell us enough about the study size or design to judge how well those results will translate to everyone. The early findings are interesting, but longer-term independent research would help us understand the benefits better.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)

FutureIQ is built for early change, not for reversing years of it.

It's a good fit if you:

  • Are noticing more hair in your brush or shower than you used to
  • Are starting to see your first grays and would rather slow them down
  • Color, lighten, or heat style often, and want to protect your scalp long term
  • Already take your skincare seriously and want the same approach for your hair

It's probably not for you if you:

  • Have mostly or fully gray hair and want your color back. It's designed for early graying.
  • Are dealing with sudden or patchy hair loss. That's a conversation for a dermatologist first.
  • Want visible results by the holidays. More on that below.
  • Won't use a product every night. It only works if you do.

What to realistically expect

This is a three-month commitment. K18 says results start showing after about three months of nightly use, which means roughly three bottles before you judge it.

Hair grows in cycles, and a new cycle takes time. Anything that claims to change your scalp in two weeks is either a miracle or marketing, and we've seen a lot more marketing.

Our advice: take a photo of your part and your hairline before you start. Take another at the three-month mark in the same light. That's the only fair way to see if it's working for you.

Where the Head Spa Comes in

A serum works best on a clean, healthy scalp, and that's exactly what our head spa is for.

Buildup from dry shampoo, styling products, oil, and hard water sits on the scalp and gets in the way of anything you apply. A head spa treatment deep-cleanses and exfoliates the scalp, then uses massage to boost circulation. Then you go home and the serum takes it from there.

Think of it like skincare: a facial every so often, and a good routine every night in between.

  • In the salon: head spa to clean, reset, and relax the scalp
  • At home: FutureIQ every night to protect it

If you're investing in your scalp, combining professional scalp care with a consistent at-home routine can be a thoughtful approach.

Questions we're getting at the front desk

Can I use it with my color or keratin treatment? It goes on the scalp, not the lengths, so it doesn't interfere with color or smoothing services. Ask your stylist about timing around a fresh color service.

Will it make my hair greasy? K18 describes FutureIQ as lightweight and non-greasy, though the finish can vary depending on your hair type and how much you apply.

Is it the same as the K18 mask I already have? No. The mask repairs damage in the hair strand. FutureIQ cares for the scalp the hair grows from. They do different jobs and can be used together.

Can I stop after one bottle? You can, but one bottle isn't enough to know if it works for you. Give it three months.

Is it safe if I'm pregnant or have a scalp condition? Check with your doctor first. We're hair experts, not physicians.

Is K18 FutureIQ worth it? K18 FutureIQ may be worth considering if you're noticing early graying or mild shedding and are comfortable committing to a $120 monthly scalp-care routine. However, its long-term effectiveness is still being established, and it isn't a substitute for medical evaluation or treatment of hair loss.

Not sure if it's right for you?

Ask us! At your next appointment, your stylist can take a look at your scalp and tell you honestly whether FutureIQ makes sense for you, or whether you'd get more from something else.
